Sometimes I have difficulties updating AVP (free) ver 8.1

On some occasions it updates and on others it won't. The reason is always the same. It says the internet connection failed.

In fact its just said it again. Now I know my internet connection is OK otherwise I couldn't have sent this message. Plus visited other websites today with no problem.

If it did it all the time I would have looked into whether for some weird reason it didn't like my internet connection but most times it will update.

Can't even be a slow connection as I've got ASDL broadband, so haven't got a slow connection and anyway would have thought even a dial-up modem could download virus updates fast enough.

One time I resolved the issue by, out of desperation, uninstalling it and reinstalling but that's not how updates should really work.

Any ideas what problem is??????

Thanks

Burylad

Since I can't tell what the specific issue may be, I'll just offer some basic general advice.
Get your temporary internet files deleted, logoff and restart Windows. Once your desktop is ready (eg, after Windows has finished loading), start Avira and I believe press F9 function key to invoke a manual update.

Sometimes it is hard to determine why a particular update connection has an issue. That's why I cite a general standard starter, in this case.

You can start Disk Cleanup from the Start menus, or select RUN option, and then type in

Code:
cleanmgr.exe

and press OK / Enter

Hello Burlylad.
Glad to hear of your success.

I'm writing to advise you and others with the same "internet connection failure" when updating Avira's AntiVir.
Be advised that their server has been under heavy demand.

With thanks to AumHa member Joe53 for the following:
and as long as your system has a high-speed internet connection, since downloading the full AntiVir definition file is 21+ MB

File for manually updating Avira for Windows 2000/XP/Vista use the IVDF (Unicode) at:
http://dl.antivir.de/down/vdf/ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip

Save the file to your desktop ( Extracting of the ZIP file is not necessary)

Start the AntiVir Software and go to the menu Update and select Manual Update

Select the downloaded IVDF file and click Open.
The message The virus definition file has been successfuly updated. appears, AntiVir is now up to date.

I've just used this method and it works like a charm. Cool
