Howdy y'all,
I recently started going through the stats that our website host provides. It's always interesting to see who is visiting your site -- the IP addresses, the countries they're from, the search engines, the search terms, etc.
Our website isn't very exciting, well to anyone but us, our family, friends, and acquaintances which is to say that it is not a commercial website. So, I don't NEED the information on who is visitng; it is merely interesting.
The webhost provides stats from awstates (http://awstats.sourceforge.net/?seenIEPage=1#FEATURES)
The thing that this package doesn't offer and that I would like to have is the country and city of the IP addresses accessing our website.
Before moving to this provider and changing computer, we had a package tht did that. Of course, I don't have access to that because I've forgotten what it was called (I wasn't in charge of our family website at that time).
So, I've searched for freeware for webstats, but that's pretty confusing and I'm not coming up with anything that says "find out the countries and cities of the IP addresses accessing your websites!"
The AWStats folks say they have a package that will do that, geiop country (http://www.maxmind.com/app/perl?rId=awstats), and geiop city (http://www.maxmind.com/app/perl?rId=awstats). But, I am not tech savvy enough to work out how to make it work.
Any help?
Thanks y'all!
CJ

I don't have any suggestions for tools to add to your hosting, but I search ip addresses all the time.
On my other computer I have a program that was installed and I could put the ip in and it would show me info including a map. I don't remember what it was called though.
One site I use sometimes is called IP2location. You can go to their website here:
http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp
or, I just found they have a firefox addon where you can just right click on a domain and it will open up a page. Either way, it will show you info, like what country and stuff. I use it a lot, but you're limited to 20 lookups a day.
Then there's whoisdomain tools
http://whois.domaintools.com/
Just type in the IP and search and it gives you a bunch of info.
Another one that might be fun for you is:
http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/ip_ranges/get_ranges.php
That one lists pretty much MOST ip ranges out there, listed by country. It's incredible how many different ip addresses are out there.
After a while you'll start to recognize some countries just by how they start.
Anyway, have fun with it. _________________ "A child of five could understand this...fetch me a child of five, I can't make head or tail of it."

Thanks for your help millipede! I had given up hearing anything on this question, but these are great sources and may answer some of my curiosity.
