There's a problem with my computer and I don't know how I got it or how to get rid of it. Here's a list of symptoms:
-some folders share attributes (ex. C:\ has the same attributes as the folder Bobby)
-Drive C: is on the list wherein the list of USB drives connected to the PC are shown
-During prolonged periods of using IE, some of the tabs don't appear properly anymore, along with problems with local browsing (folders don't open properly anymore, etc.) and it only disappears after I close IE.

These problems have been in my PC for the past year now, and I don't know what to do. If anyone can help, please, I really appreciate it.

Welcome to the Castlecops forum.

Regarding the IE problems during prolonged use, it could be IE "memory leaks". Most large software pieces do "leak" some memory (you can check it accumulating in Task Manager), and only recycling the program will release the held memory.

I don't understand the "list of USB drives" problem.

Have you scanned your system for malware recently?

Yes, actually. Nothing registered.
Well, it's like this: in your typical list of connected USB devices, you have the names of all those things plugged in via front USB ports, right? The C drive is one of those names. When I try to do the "safely remove" process, it obviously can't be stopped because it's in use. I know this is an anomaly, but I don't know why or how it happened.

My C:\ drive is the main hard disk where XP is installed. I have another one (E:\) connected as well.

So you are actually saying that if you try to 'safely remove' the C drive, on which XP is installed, it cannot be done as you are some kind of using it? This is normal of course as you are running XP at that moment so the C drive is really being used.

If you are meaning that you cannot remove any drive, like USB sticks, 'safely' please let me know.

Greets, John.

No, I'm not really having problems with the flash drives, I'm having a problem with the C: drive. The fact that it's there bothers me because it's not connected via USB. It's directly connected to the motherboard. It's location is the Primary ATA channel.

Oh, and if anyone has any clues as to m problem with the folder properties, please shed some light. It's really bothersome and annoying.

But why would you safely want to remove the C drive if you are running XP on it?

What is exactly the problem with the attributes? Please explain it in detail as we will be able to give better answers!

Erm, EXACTLY. Why would I? That's why I'm puzzled as to why it appears on that list.

As for the attributes, I'll give an example.

Let's say there's this folder named "Pics" located on the desktop. I want to set that folder with the photos setting (the one with the automatic thumbnails view.) I would then notice that the "My Computer" folder's view, which is in my case the 'Documents' type of view sorted by 'type' and shown in 'groups,' gets that same set of attributes without me altering it. In fact, I can't alter it at all! Then if I change my "pics folder again, the My Computer changes as well, with the exact same attributes.

Are there any good virus databases around the net besides Norton's?

I wouldn't call Norton a good virus database.

Here are some Anti Virus products which are free for personal use and most used:
Avast
Avira AntiVir Personal

Here are some really good paid programs which you can buy online or in a shop nearby:
ESET NOD32
Kaspersky Anti-Virus or Kaspersky Internet Security with Firewall included

Remember that if you have Norton at the moment and are going to install some other software that you remove Norton fully. This is a real pain.

First go to Add/Remove programs and remove all the Norton components. Then run the following removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument
