I have used the AVG6.0 for a year and I thought I had a good AV program. Recently the updates became more and more difficult to obtain until yesterday when it became totally impossible to connect to Grisoft.com.
I shut AVG down and uninstalled it. I downloaded a program known as Avast. I restarted and Avast ran a scan from the boot. It found numerous trojans and viruses that AVG had missed and got rid of all of them. My PC now roars once again instead of coughing along! Thanks to Avast. I am totally impressed so far with Avast. I have turned away from AVG-Grisoft.

Highly decent free anti-virus program. While someone posted it is in the same class as Avast that is no true in my experience. Security Expert David Lipman''s testings with anti-virus programs and my own testing along with experience proves that AVG Free > Avast. Not to mention many of my friends that use AVG Free and I prefer it over Avast by a vast majority; however, AVG has quite some competition with AntiVir in my opinion.

Avast and AVG are in the same category. They''re nearly identical in quality. What AVG misses Avast finds...what Avast misses AVG finds. Both have picked up false positives before in many tests including our own in shop tests. With both of these packages you get what you pay for...though sadly for both of them, even if you pay for it you still get the free antivirus quality detection rates and defense.

I used to use AVG a long while back.
Use whichever one makes you feel good...there is no wrong choice.

If you would rather not only feel better but actually get a better product you might want to consider taking a look at Eset NOD32. It''s three steps above avast and AVG, two steps above Panda, one step above Norton (bloated crap...it does work though...just slow, bulky and resource heavy), Kaspersky (always gets false positives, unuseful features and lame interface) and Mcafee(same as Norton in system punishment, but some months it gets better detection rates)...

It''s not that expensive really, especially considering the fee is only once a year. for example, if you only make $10 an hour, in under four hours you''d have enough for a one year subscription. You could make that kind of money helping your neighbor get the spyware of their computer! :P

I use AVG Free as a part of my daily work cleaning customer''s computers of unwanted trash, and find it to be one of the better AntiVirus programs available, Including most of the You must buy this big names.

AVG 6 needed to be configured properly to be fully effective (most notably Heuristics), but the new AVG 7 Free has taken that into account.

I will look into this Avast! a bit more, but for now I''ll stick with what works best for me.

Grisoft is ending support for AVG6, so you should upgrade to AVG7.

Can you really knock-down AVG Free for this? After all, one of Grisoft''s main selling points for AVG Professional is:

Access to guaranteed high-speed servers for downloading updates and program upgrades

I got that from their website. Also, Grisoft is located in the Czech Republic.

Thanks for the info about Avast. Will check it out.

You might want to upgrade to AVG v7 Free Edition. It detects viruses that AVG v6 doesn''t.
