I have obtained the final Windows XP Service Pack 3 update (build 5512) from MSDN, and have successfully installed it. I did some preparations before starting the update, listed below, and I recommend that anyone installing XP-SP3 follows these instructions to minimize the risk of an upgrade failure.
The lines in bold are imperative!
- Run CCleaner to get rid of unnecessary junk on the system
- Make sure to have at least 900MB of available disk space on the C: (system) drive
- Run CHKDSK on the C: (system) drive to make sure there are no errors
- Run a full scan with anti-virus and anti-spyware apps to make sure there is no malware on the system
- Run the defragmenter
- Make a full backup of the C: (system) drive*
- Shut down all user applications and processes
- Disable the network connection**
- Shut down the software firewall
- Disable all active anti-virus and anti-spyware applications
- Disable any other security software
*) Test the restore procedure! I tested my backup and found that I initially could not restore it. I had to create a new boot disk that was able to restore my backup file.
**) Because we are disabling the software firewall, disconnecting from the network/Internet is highly recommended.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Web (RTW) Delayed

Thanks for that info ... that was a nice one to get along for anybody out here.. as some times it really becomes head wrecking to get to go with the updates and in the mean time screwing the things out in between...

I have installed the same version from the same source as you.
Noticed my C:\ drive now is bigger because new Uninstall (hidden) folders ( $ ) of abt 730 MB.
Is it safe to delete these folders or I should keep them.I know if I delete Uninstallers,after thet will be impossible to Uninstal SP 3, but why I have to delete this Updates.

If you have backed up your system prior to the SP3 install, then you can always restore this backup if you need to undo the SP3 install.
It's up to you if you want to delete this uninstaller folder, but I'd recommend that you back it up somewhere before deleting it.

I've installed SP3 for a while. However, after installation, I've noticed that Windows fails to load system files during the boot-up process. In a few words, the PC hangs while the bootscreen loads. Any device attached on the computer stops working and the hard disk looks a bit dead...
I've used this command "WindowsXP-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu /u /n /o /m /v /forcerestart" for a native installation without having the option to uninstall the service pack.
It appears that build 5512 is not the final version. In my opinion, the final version would be build 5573 (or higher) and the real size of the standalone package is 580MB instead of 316. Microsoft has delayed the RTW release for this reason.

Installed the Greek SP-3 on my Acer Aspire 3053 and it worked fine. The English SP-3 caused my Vero Station 3 desktop PC to crash during boot.
My desktop PC has an Intel Pentium Core-Duo III processor housed into a Gigabyte GA-PE35-DS4 motherboard featuring 4 GB SDRAM, two LG SATA DVD-RW drives, an on-board card reader, a Marvell Yukon PCI E-Gigabit LAN port with a Realtek Azalia HD controller and a Western Digital Caviar SATA hard disk with 500GB. I'm very curious WHY SP-3 is unable to handle desktop PCs with dual-core CPUs and hangs without reason? Maybe a faulty CPU, a crappy HD drive or similar hardware problems, perhaps?
The big annoyance is that now my desktop PC is dead, ready to be thrown into the trash can. I doesn't have enough money to replace the faulty CPU. This means buying a new PC for nothing! Too expensive for nothing else matters!!!!

I used SP3 since Beta, and now that it's RTW I put it on my mom's comp, something which I noticed on both comps is that the screensaver got disabled after update. You may wish to check on it.

Anybody using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 should upgrade to Virtual PC 2007 SP1; it supports both XP-SP3 and Vista-SP1 as host and virtual operating system.

I have a HP Pavilon a106n, 340 Intel Celeron D Processor, 512MB PC2700 DDR
SDRam memory, 100GB DMA hard drive. I run WindowsXP SP2.
All was well, I had installed SP3, until I tried to print something using my Lexmark
1300 printer which use the USB port. Everything stopped working and the machine
froze up. Security software stopped working. I wound up doing a complete
restore and am back to SP2 and IE6. I have Firefox as well and it is my default
browser.
I would not recommend this hunk of %^&* to anyone.

I would have tried to install the latest printer drivers from Lexmark before reverting to SP2.
I have seen hundreds of successful XP-SP3 updates, and everybody is enjoying their increased performance
